PROLOGUE

Education is eternal. Since the beginning of creation, man has constantly striven to learn,

and the learning process is not an easy thing.

As a part of this learning process, Alton High becomes single moments: excitement and

joy, togetherness and solitude.

These things AltonVligh is, and on the following pages, in an attempt at totality, AHS
will be portrayed — the winners, the losers, the "don't cares." We proudly present the
TATLER to the Class of 1974 in hopes that we have captured their personal memories
for eternity. AHS is thousands of students, all with different aims and different goals.
Still, Alton Senior High School is much more.

ADELSON MORE IRA
OUR A. F.S. STUDENT FROM
BRAZIL

This year Alton High School has the pleasure of welcoming
Adelson Moreira from Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Brazil.
Adelson is living with the Charles Sheppard family during his
stay in the United States.

Chem-O, C.P. English, physics, and algebra II are the subjects
Adelson is studying at Alton High. In his free time he enjoys
dancing, attending sports events, and playing tennis; however,
Adelson's visit to the United States is accented most by his
enthusiasm for travel and making new friends.

Adelson is sponsored by the American Field Service, an inter-
national organization devoted to the promotion of fellowship
and understanding among nations. The students at Alton High
hope Adelson has enjoyed his stay in Alton as much as we have
enjoyed having him.

Jarmo with his American family.

The students of Alton High School are happy to welcome Jarmo Pontinen,
the exchange student from Espoo, Finland. Espoo is located five miles from
the capital, Helsinki. Jarmo's visit is sponsored by Youth for Understanding,
an international teen-age student exchange program whose purpose is to
acquaint other countries with the American democratic system.

In his spare time Jarmo enjoys sailing, bicycling, swimming, and working
jigsaw puzzles. He is also an active member of the Boy Scouts. The sub-
jects he is studying while at Alton High are German II, creative media,
calculus, and U.S. history.

While in the United States, Jarmo is living with the Fred Finck family.
We certainly hope Jarmo has enjoyed visiting Alton and will take home
many good memories of his stay.

THE STORY OF CAROUSEL

At a carnival in a small New England seaport, Billy Bigelow
meets two young local girls, Julie Jordan and Carrie Pip-
peridge, who work at Bascombe's knitting mill. Although
Billy is used to young girls admiring him, he feels Julie is
different. Because of his attraction to Julie and the atten-
tion he gives her, he stirs up some difficulty with Mrs.
Mullins, the carousel owner, and ends up losing his job.
Though neither one of them has a job, Billy and Julie
marry.

One fine June day, while Billy and Julie are joining the
townsfolk at a clambake, Billy's friend. Jigger, convinces
Billy of an easy way to get some money: rob wealthy mill
owner Bascombe while everyone else is enjoying the clam-
bake. Thinking of Julie and their soon-to-be baby, which
Julie has just informed him they were having, Billy agrees.

Bascombe, however, surprises Billy and Jigger, and fights
them off. Jigger escapes, but Billy kills himself. While in
heaven he is told he has one chance to visit earth. In
returning, he finds his daughter, Louise, in her teens. She
is avoided by the "respectably" townspeople due to the
disgrace in which her father died.

While at Louise's high school graduation, Billy is able to
communicate with her and Julie. He tells them that he has
always loved them and still does. He also tells them to face
the future with faith, hope, and courage.

The 1973 Alton Cross Country team can only be described as a gutty,
never-say-die squad. Throughout the season, injuries to key performers
slowed the team, but they always came back strong. The Redbird harriers
won most of their duel and triangular contests and emerged as the team
to beat going into the conference championship meet. Alton High came
alive in the conference clash with a second by Casey Reinking, a third by
Mike Sawyer, and a fourth by Paul VanHyning, which sparked the team
to the championship title. Jim Boswell and Neal Bohlman rounded out the
redbird scoring with twelth and twenty fifth place finishes. Bob Eppel
won the sophomore division for Alton.

Alton's harriers proved to be the top team in the district meet, too, scoring
only 41 points in a field of seventeen teams. However, Edwardsville clipped
the redbird's wings at the Sectional final in Springfield as Alton finished
second behind the fired up Tigers. High hopes were dimmed in the state
meet when Alton High finished twenty first, in the tough competition.
Although the team was disappointed with its performance at state, the
Redbirds can boast another successful season under Coaches Wigger and
Diddlebock. Mike Sawyer was selected to the all metro cross country team
while Casey Reinking and Paul Vanhyning received honorable mentions.
Working under pressure and handicaps, the scrappy performance of the
Alton High Cross Country team deserves praise from the school.

With the return of a small but talented crop
of seniors, including an all senior backfield,
the Alton football Redbirds and Coach Iman
looked forward to a 1973 schedule in which
they would open against the number one
team in Indiana. They would also play the
number one and two teams in Illinois away
from home. Against Terre Haute South,
first game jitters and inexperience overcame
some outstanding individual performances,
and the Redbirds succumbed 20-0. How-
ever, two trademarks of Alton High foot-
ball 1973 were revealed in the game; the
faith of Coach Iman in his untested juniors,
and the team's failure to give up. inspite of
the situation. Alton followed with a 23-8
loss to a tough Quincy team and then trav-
eled to Belleville West. The first league
contest for the Redbirds resulted in a 33-0
shutout for the Maroons, but the game was
much closer than the score indicated. Twice,
Alton touchdowns were called back because
of penalties and the battle in the offensive
and defensive trenches was, for the most
part, a stand off. The following week Alton
High ran up against the Cahokia Comman-
ches in their home opener. Two early touchdowns put the Redbirds
ahead 14-0, and they held on for a 14-6 victory after stopping a
Commanche drive late in the game.

Alton's next three games were the low point of the season. Hustle
and spirit could not overcome costly mistakes as the Redbirds were
still trying to put it all together. Following a 27-6 loss to Granite
City South, Alton jumped out to an early 6-0 lead at home against
the Edwardsville Tigers, but then failed to generate anymore of-
fense. They ended up on the short end of a 31-6 score. Next the
team traveled to Rockford Guilford and were shutout 33-0 by a
strong Viking team. With a 1-6 record the outlook for the final
three games appeared bleak.

On the following Saturday afternoon the Alton High Redbirds
showed what they could do. Brilliant execution and newly found
spirit enabled Alton to run over the Collinsville Kahoks. Coach
Iman sought four good quarters of football, and he got it as the
team waltzed to a 39-7 win. Belleville East was the Homecoming
opponent in the last home game of the year. The hard hitting
game was scoreless until the Redbird seniors, in their finale in
front of the home fans, took charge. Neal Lockhart took a pitch-
out left, reversed his field and took off around right end. Key
blocks by Tony Joehl and Jeff Copley enabled Lockhart to score
on a 78 yard ramble. As the Lancers tried to tie the game a des-
peration screen pass was intercepted by defensive end Steve Johns
who galloped in for the touchdown as the final buzzer sounded. It
was a fitting climax to a hard fought game. The East St. Louis
Flyers, ranked number five in the downstate poll, were the op-
ponents in the last game of the year. The Redbirds outplayed the
eventual conference champs, but the game ended in a scoreless
tie.

The turnabout of the Redbird's play showed the determination
and spirit of the 1973 team. The hardwork resulted in a 3-3-1
record in conference play, and a 3-6-1 overall, which was good
for fourth place in the Southwest Conference standings. The
Alton Redbirds had many outstanding performers on the '73
squad. Tony Joehl was recognized as all Southwest Conference,
all District, and all Metro punter. Jim Croxton and Tony Walker
were voted to the second all Southwest Conference team. A
good team needs hard-working coaches like Head Coach Norm
Iman and his assistants Jack Martin, Reno Calcari, Gary Labertew,
Felix Macias, Collis James, and Jim Arico. The TATLER thanks
the coaching staff and football team for an exciting year.

With a new coach and a new look, the Alton Basketball Red-
birds are off and winging towards another exciting season. The
new coach is Glenn McPherson, who last year as the sopho-
more basketball coach guided his team to an undefeated
season. The new look is an 11-1 record and statewide recog-
nition for the Redbirds are ranked as the second best basket-
ball team in Illinois.

The young Redbirds have gotten off to a 4-1 conference
record, including a tough victory over Edwardsville in the
Tiger's gym early in the year. East St. Louis has dealt the Red-
birds their only defeat and Coach McPherson vows that it
will be the only one. The biggest achievement so far has been
winning the Carbondale Holiday Tournament. Alton faced
Collinsville in the finals and the Redbirds edged the Kahoks
in an excitinq game 81-78. It was the first time Alton had
ever won tha Tournament.

Balance is the key to the Redbirds success. Every member
of the team has contributed to the winning cause. Coach
McPherson can feel free to go to his bench without hurting
the team, as juniors such as Maurice Williams, Justin Scheiter,
and Ken Ramsey have seen a lot of action. Doug Nalley leads
the team in scoring while Jeff Copley heads the assist list.
Willie Huff and Mike Stumpe have also helped the Redbirds.

The Redbirds have captured the spirit of the school and
Coach McPherson and his squad hope to continue their out-
standing performance in 1974.

The Alton High wrestling team has gotten off to a good start this season, despite the bad weather which washed out four of our
meets thus far. To date the Redbirds own a 4-5 record. The 1973-74 squad features ten returning lettermen, including senior Jim
Farrow whose undefeated 8-0-3 record in the 126 pound weight class gives him an excellent chance in the state tournament this
spring. Sophomore, Ray Garrett, leads the team with seven pins and juniors. Jay Demond and Tony Coleman, each have five. The
Redbirds performed well in the big Alton Invitational Tournament, finishing second in a seven team field behind Civic Memorial.
The young team has been improving steadily and Coaches Ron Mclntire and Jack Martin are optimistic about the remainder of the
wrestling season.

Jamey Smith, a ''walk on" senior, has displayed the potential of an

The Alton High tennis team concluded their 1973
season with a fine 8-10 overall record. In Con-
ference matches, the team finished with a 4-6
record.

The team consisted of eighteen players: two
seniors, eight juniors, and eight sophomores.

There were some outstanding players among the
squad including the two seniors, Randy Jackson
and Gary Eisenrich, and junior Mark Showers.

Randy Jackson compiled a 16-3 win-loss record
for the season.

Concluding the regular season, Alton then ad-
vanced to District play. Alton was victorious
against Triad 6-2, 6-2 and then again against
Edwardsville 6-2, 6-1. In semi-finals, Alton lost
to Wood River, 2-6, 6-2, and 7-5 thus finishing
fifth in the District. With this loss Alton just
missed a playing berth in the State Tournament.

The Alton High tennis team featured as a new
addition in the 1973 season four "ball girls" who
assisted the team during matches and practices.

Alton High appreciates the hard work of Coach
Sterrett and the team during a successful season.

EDITOR'S MESSAGE

To the student body of Alton Senior High School:

As the 1973-1974 school year comes to a close, so ends another year of events which shape our lives
and express what we are; our activities, achievements, friends, feelings, and our hopes for the future The
purpose of a yearbook is to capture these events for all of us to look back on in the years to come. In
this book, we have attempted to accomplish this by keeping with the tradition of excellence set by the
first Alton High TATLER staff.

I feel that the 1974 staff is of extremely high caliber They have worked hard in producing this book
and I would like to thank them for their participation. Ned Buddell and Betsy Hanrahan, my co-editors,'
have my personal thanks for their help in the organization and production of the '74 TATLER. To our
advisor, Mr. Dale Livengood, I extend the appreciation and respect of the entire staff. He has answered
questions and provided the necessary information which was so vital for the completion of the 1974

We give this book to you, the student body, and dedicate it to the school and tradition it represents.

Time it was.

And what a time it was.

It was . . .

A time of innocence,

A time of confidences.

Long ago ... it must be . . .
I have a photograph.
Preserve your memories;
They're all that's left you.

Paul Simon
